The Central Railway Vigilance Department has arrested a man who was impersonating a Railway Board Vigilance Inspector and demanding money from a railway employee, officials said on Friday.

The accused was caught during a planned operation at Kalyan Railway Station on Wednesday, following a complaint received from the victim.

According to Central Railway officials, the railway employee approached the Vigilance Department after suspecting fraudulent activity. Based on the complaint, the vigilance team planned a trap and monitored the suspect’s movements.

The accused identified as Harish Kamble, was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 20,000 from the complainant, officials said.

Accused demanded money for clearing arrears

Officials said the accused falsely claimed to be a Railway Board Vigilance Inspector and demanded money in exchange for clearing payment arrears from the DRM Office, Mumbai.

Investigations revealed that the accused had earlier taken Rs 60,000 online from the complainant on the promise of arranging a transfer. However, the transfer never took place. He later approached the complainant again, offering faster disbursement of payment arrears in return for money.

Accused handed over to GRP

After being caught in the trap, the accused was handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP), Kalyan, for further legal action.

An FIR has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act, 2023, Sections 318(2) and 319(2), related to cheating and impersonation.

Under the law, the offences are punishable with imprisonment of up to three years for cheating and up to five years for impersonation, or fine, or both.

Railway urges vigilance against fraud

Central Railway has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against corruption and urged railway employees and the public to remain alert. Citizens have been advised to report any suspicious or fraudulent activities to the vigilance department or concerned authorities.
