The police in Maharashtra's Palghar district have foiled a robbery attempt with the arrest of 11 persons, many of them with serious criminal backgrounds, an official said on Friday, reported news agency PTI.

Police took the action after receiving information on Tuesday that about 10 men were to gather near a fabrication shop to rob a bungalow in Ram Rahim Nagar of Evershine City in Vasai, reported PTI.

A team comprising personnel from the Crime Branch Cell-2, Vasai, and police stations in Waliv, Manikpur, and Achole laid a trap and apprehended 11 suspects, an official release stated on Friday.

Many of the arrested persons are repeat offenders. Cases of attempt to murder, robbery, dacoity, anti-drug law violations, and even murder have been registered against them in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts, it said, reported PTI.

Police have seized a country-made revolver, four live cartridges, a chopper, a knife, scissors, a hammer and chilli powder from the group, the release said.

In another case, four members of an interstate gang involved in stealing cash from ATM machines after cutting them open have been arrested here, the police said, reported PTI.

An ATM in Udgir area was broken open using a gas cutter and cash was stolen by unknown criminals a few days ago, said an official.

Four suspects were apprehended near a gravel center on the Latur-Ausa road at around 3 pm on Wednesday, he said.

A gas cutter, oxygen cylinders, two forged number plates from Telangana, a dagger and Rs 1 lakh in cash were seized from their possession, reported PTI.

The arrested individuals were identified as Mohammad Fajruddin (40) from Nanglipathan, Rajasthan; Mustakeem Amin (26) from Bima, Firozpur, Haryana; Hameed Habibkhan (25) from Parvakheda, Bhopal and Likhiman Hoori (27) from Bajot, Alwar, Rajasthan, reported PTI.

Police suspect that the gang could be involved in similar crimes in other states.

Meanwhile, police have arrested a 25-year-old history-sheeter for illegally possessing a revolver and two live rounds in the Bandra area of Mumbai, an official said on Thursday.
