A group of persons allegedly killed a man and injured another person in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/maharashtra-womans-body-found-in-suitcase-near-creek-in-thane-murder-case-registered-cops-begin-probe-23604698" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Maharashtra's</a> Thane district, police said on Tuesday, reported news agency PTI.
The police have arrested the main accused in the incident which took place near a temple in the Mumbra area at around 9 pm on Monday, they said.
The key accused, Ritik Vinay Dubey, also known as Pandit, and some other persons allegedly attacked two men, both residents of Devi Chal village in Ganesh Pada, with sharp weapons, Mumbra police station's senior inspector Anil Shinde said, reported PTI.
One of the men, Abhijit Bhaskar Patil (20), was killed, while Sumit Sunil Gawde (22) was seriously injured and <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/maharashtra-gangster-wanted-in-attempt-to-murder-case-arrested-in-thane-district-23604644" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">undergoing treatment</a> in a hospital, he said, adding the motive behind the attack was being probed, reported PTI.
Dubey was arrested and a case was registered against him and the other accused on charges of murder and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the official said.
<h2>Thane man loses Rs 11.69 lakh in forex trading fraud; police launch probe</h2>
In another case, police have registered a case against 16 persons for allegedly cheating a man of Rs 11.69 lakh in a forex trading racket in Maharashtra's Thane district, officials said on Tuesday, reported PTI.
The accused lured the 24-year-old victim, a resident of <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/woman-paramour-kill-her-husband-dump-body-in-river-in-thane-district-23602268" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Ulhasnagar</a>, into forex trading by promising high returns.
Based on their instructions, he transferred Rs 11,69,165 to multiple bank accounts between October 14 and November 22. But when he asked for his returns and his invested amount, the accused stopped responding, an official from Ulhasnagar police station said, reported PTI.
Based on the victim's complaint, the police registered a case on November 30 against 16 persons, including a woman and a person posing as a customer care executive, on charges of cheating under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, he added.
<h2>Former counsellor with Thane academic institute booked for cheating</h2>
Meanwhile, police have registered an FIR against a former academic counsellor of an educational institute in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/thane-jeweller-murdered-police-arrest-wife-and-son-amid-property-row-23604093" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Maharashtra's</a> Thane city for allegedly cheating students and misusing their data to fraudulently collect money, officials said on Monday, reported PTI.
The accused in July this year stopped reporting to work at the institute, which provides training courses for students in analytics and technology, they said.
He, however, continued to contact students, falsely presenting himself as still employed with the institute and allegedly collected Rs 48,866 without the establishment's knowledge, an official from Naupada police station said.
"The accused misused <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/thane-three-booked-for-attempt-to-murder-after-man-stabbed-over-cigarette-ash-23604266" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">student data</a> and collected money directly from them into his personal mobile-linked account. He did not inform the students that he was no longer associated with the institute and misled them under various pretexts," the official said, reported PTI.
Following a complaint by the institute, the police on Saturday registered a case against the counsellor under sections 316(4) (criminal breach of trust) and 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the police said.
