A 12-year-old-boy was miraculously saved after he reportedly fired a round from a pistol thinking it was a toy that he had found in a garbage heap in Dahisar area of Mumbai, police said on Saturday, reported the PTI.

"The boy who found a pistol in a garbage dump fired a round assuming it was a toy, though fortunately no one was injured," a Mumbai police official said on Saturday.


The incident took place on Friday near a ground close to Saikrupa Chawl in Dahisar, a suburb on the northern tip of the metropolis.



"The boy found the pistol along with four rounds. Thinking it was a toy, he fired one round," the official said.

A police team rushed to the spot after being alerted about the firing and confiscated the pistol and bullets, he said.

A case has been registered against an unknown person, the Dahisar police station official said, adding efforts were on to trace the details of the pistol and its ownership, according to the PTI.

Girl student dies by suicide at govt-run ashram school in Palghar

Meanwhile in an another incident in adjoining Palghar district of Maharashtra, a Class 9 girl student allegedly died by suicide on the premises of an ashram school, a residential educational institute for tribal children on Saturday, an official said, as per the PTI.

The 15-year-old was found dead at the hostel building of the school, located in the Dahanu taluka in Palghar, a police official said.

No suicide note has been recovered, he said, according to the PTI.

The school operates under the Dahanu Integrated Tribal Development Project.

The reason for her suicide is yet to be ascertained, said the official from the Talasari police station, adding the body has been sent for post-mortem and further investigations in the matter were underway, he said.

A local resident said that the incident raises questions concerning mental health support and supervision provided to students in ashram school hostels.
