The Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers (RCF) Police have arrested two men for allegedly running an extortion racket outside the Indian Oil Corporation premises in Chembur. According to the police, the accused persons threatened tanker drivers and forcibly collected parking money.

Police have identified the accused as Hitendra Thakur, 31, and Imran Ibrahim Hussain, 28, both residents of Govandi. The accused demanded parking money from tanker drivers, exploiting congestion outside the IOC facility, said police.

The incident dates back to the intervening night of January 1, when the complainant, a 32-year-old manager employed with a transport company, had parked an oil tanker. The matter escalated on January 20, when the accused demanded Rs 1000 for allowing the tanker to be parked. When the amount was initially refused, they threatened to kill him and damage the vehicle. Fearing harm and disruption to operations, the victim paid Rs 1000.

Based on the complaint, RCF police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and arrested the accused on Wednesday. Investigators believe the accused may have been systematically targeting tanker drivers and transport staff, allegedly charging Rs 1000 per tanker.

“So far, only one complainant has come forward in this case. We are investigating whether the accused similarly collected money from other tanker drivers as well,” said senior police inspector Dattatray Patil.

CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being examined to establish the frequency of such incidents and to identify any additional victims, said police, adding further investigation is underway.
