A 29-year-old probationary officer attached with the Navi Mumbai Police was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000. The accused had demanded money from a complainant to settle his complaint in the police station, an official said.

According to police, a 32-year-old Navi Mumbai resident has a commercial shop space in Sanpada. He had rented the shop to a person named Chunnilal Khatanwalia. As Khatanwalia was not paying rent on a regular basis, the complainant asked him to vacate it.

However, during the COVID-19 enforced lockdown, Khatanwalia had locked the shop and gone to his hometown without prior notice. In November 20, the complainant broke the lock placed by Khatanwalia and put his own lock. This resulted in conflict between the two and the matter reached Sanpada police station.

"Khatanwalia had written a complaint letter to Sanpada police station seeking action against shop owner. Probationary Police Sub Inspector Rahul Koli demanded Rs 30,000 from the shop's owner to settle the matter." an officer from Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) said.

Following this, the shop owner approached the ACB and on February 12 registered a complaint. The next day, probationary PSI Kole was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe of Rs 30,000.
