The cops are probing yet another card-cloning scam in the city after a constable with the Mumbai Police lost Rs 6,000 in ATM transactions he had never carried out.
The victim, Vanil Gaikwad, who is currently posted at the protection and security department and works as the bodyguard of MLA Manisha Tai Chaudhary, has registered a complaint with the Borivli Police.
The incident came to light on February 9, when Gaikwad visited an ATM centre in Gorai to withdraw cash. On checking the mini-statement, he realised that Rs 6,000 had been withdrawn from his bank.
Gaikwad then enquired with his family, if they had withdrawn cash without his knowledge. As his family seemed equally oblivious, Gaikwad visited the nearest branch of Axis Bank, the next morning. On checking the bank statement, he learnt that someone had withdrawn Rs 6,000 during two separate transactions, a few days ago. Further, bank officials revealed that money had been withdrawn from an ATM in an area that he had not visited.
Gaikwad immediately blocked his card and lodged a complaint with the Borivli Police. "We have registered an FIR under section 420 of Indian Penal Code for cheating. We are currently investigating the case," said a senior official with the Borivli Police.
