Cops in Nalasopara are on the lookout for a helmet-wearing extortionist, who has been dropping envelopes with typed notes to jewellery shops in the area.
According to the police, around 10 to 12 jewellery shop owners in Nalasopara have received the note over the last few weeks. In the letter, the accused has demanded Rs 10 lakh as extortion money, and threatened with dire consequences, including harming family members of the jewellery shop owner, if he failed to make the arrangements on time.

"The extortionist further ordered the owner to put the money in a black bag, even specifying what kind of currency notes he needed, and asked to leave the bag on the road," the officer said.
After one of the shop owners approached the police this week, officials decided to carry out an investigation. While going through CCTV images, the police learnt that the person who dropped the envelope had covered his face with a helmet. Source believe that the extortionist might be a first-time offender.

"We have registered an FIR in the case and have already started investigations on the basis of the CCTV footage. We are probing all angles," said a senior official with the Nalasopara Police.
