Mumbai crime: Man demands Rs 2 lakh from criminal to save him, is caught

Accused Ramlu Bamani

The Dharavi police have arrested a 40-year-old man for demanding Rs 2 lakh from a criminal on the pretext of saving him from being externed. The cops got to know about it when the accused went to the police station and expressed his inability to pay such a huge sum. On being questioned, he revealed that a person by the name Ramlu Bamani demanded the money from him on behalf of the cops.

According to the police, Vinayak Kuldev, 41, was prosecuted under the Maharashtra Gambling Ban Act, but the following day he got bail from the court on a bond of R5,000. Thereafter, Bamani approached Kuldev and said that he got to know the latter would be externed. Then Kuldev said that he knew many police officers in Dharavi and Kurla, and if he paid R2 lakh to him, he would save him from being externed.

When Kuldev expressed his inability to pay such a huge amount, Bamani asked him to give Rs 1 lakh. That is when Kuldev decided to talk to the cops and request them to not extern him. Kuldev reached Dharavi police station and started pleading with the officers. He even told them that it would not be possible for him to pay that much money. When the cops questioned him further, they got to know about Bamani and that he was fraudulently trying to take money from him.

Further, Kuldev told the cops that Bamani asked him to pay Rs 1 lakh in instalments of Rs 10,000 every week. Thereafter, the cops laid a trap and when Bamani arrived to take the first instalment from Kuldev, they arrested him.

Requesting anonymity, a police officer said, “Bamani has a criminal record. He has two cases against him in Tardeo police station, two cases in Shahunagar and one case in Bhoiwada police stations. He tries to take money from people by intimidating them.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police Pranay Ashok told mid-day, “Whenever the police take action, they do it as per the law. The public should not believe such people. We appeal to people that if any such person approaches them, they should contact us.”
