A Mumbai police constable has been arrested by the Kasarwadavli police for posing as the chief of the Special Protection Group of the CBI and allegedly duping four people of Rs 88 lakh. The accused a constable attached with the Yellow Gate police station had not reported for work since December 2017.
The accused would claim to be the chief of the SPG, an elite group that provided security to the Prime Minister of India and his family, and duped top officials of an insurance company by promising a number of benefits as per a report by the <a title="Policeman dupes people " href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/posing-as-spg-chief-city-cop-dupes-four-of-rs-88-lakh-nabbed/articleshow/63004537.cms" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Times of India</a>.
The accused worked his charm on the victims by telling them that he was highly influential and had very good contacts at Mantralaya. Between March 2016 and December 2017, the accused managed to take Rs 88 lakh from his victims and returned only a sum of Rs 3 lakh
Nasir Kulkarni, inspector (crime), said, &ldquo;He promised a liquor licence to one victim, shops in a MHADA building to another, stalls at railway stations, and jobs for others as ticket-checkers in the railways.&rdquo; It was only when the victims followed up with the accused to ask about the returns they were supposed to receive did they realize they had been duped. Following the complaint the police launched a manhunt and the accused was arrested from Nalasopara on Tuesday
The police are now investigating if he had duped any more people.
The accused was produced in the magistrate&rsquo;s court of R T Ingle, who remanded him to police custody for seven days.
