Mumbai Police's Crime Branch Unit-6 has arrested three men including a fake cop who allegedly cheated a woman by promising her husband a job in the Income Tax Department, police said on Friday.

The accused used fake documents and posed as government officials to carry out the scam.

According to police sources, the main accused Vishal Arun Kamble (35) pretended to be a police officer and convinced the victim, a vegetable vendor from Mahul MHADA Colony in Chembur, that her husband would get a government job.

Kamble, along with Sahil Nitin Gaikwad (20), who acted as a mediator, and Prakash Dinkar Bhalerao (40), the alleged mastermind, took a total of ₹8 lakh from the woman in several instalments. Despite the payment, no job was given, and the money was not returned.

The trio were found to be creating fake appointment letters and job-related documents to deceive people. Acting on a tip-off, the Crime Branch team, led by API Dhutaraj, ASI Desai, PC Bodhare, and HCD Dale, used technical analysis to locate the suspects. Mastermind Prakash Bhalerao was arrested at Suman Nagar in Chunabhatti.

All three accused have been booked under sections 318(4), 316(2), 204, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for fraud and impersonation. They have been remanded to police custody.

Inspector Bharat Ghone of Unit-6 said, “We urge people to immediately contact Crime Branch Unit-6, Chembur if they have been given fake job appointment letters or promises by the arrested accused.”
