The incident occurred on the night of June 20 when the victim, identified as Khokan Nitai Mandal, was heading home after closing his shop.
He was stopped by three men who claimed to be Crime Branch officers. Under the pretext of interrogation, they made Mandal sit in a car parked nearby, an official said.

After the incident, Mandal immediately approached the Meghwadi police station and lodged a complaint. A case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) pertaining to robbery and extortion.
