A passenger claimed that he was injured in an alleged knife attack onboard a Mumbai AC local train following which the police have launched investigations into the matter, the officials said on Tuesday.
"A joint investigation by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has been launched into the matter. However, no formal complaint has been received so far, and no injured person has been found at local hospitals," said an official.
The officials said that on October 6 at 10:45 pm, a message was received about an alleged knife assault inside the third coach (CST-end) of the 9:39 pm Parel to Kalyan AC local. The message claimed the injured person had alighted at Sion station. However, the complainant’s phone number was not provided, making it difficult for the authorities to follow up directly.
Acting on the complaint, the RPF staff at Sion station, including Police Constable Jagdish Rathod and Assistant Sub-Inspector Nagina Yadav, along with GRP officials, conducted a search of the station premises. No injured person was found at the spot.
CCTV footage showed a man in a red T-shirt exiting the AC local, holding a handkerchief near his eye, but he did not approach the police at the station or seek any help, said the officials.
Further investigation revealed that GRP Head Constable Umesh Thakre, posted at Matunga, had earlier stopped two injured men involved in a fight outside the city area. One of them fled, while the other, matching the description of the man in the red T-shirt-refused to file a complaint when asked, said the officials.
The man reportedly boarded the AC local train after the incident and is believed to be the same person seen alighting at Sion.
Inquiries made with Dharavi Police and Sion Hospital confirmed that no complaint or medical case related to such an injury had been reported. The train guard, Gosavi, also stated that he was not aware of any such incident during the journey.
"The matter is currently being investigated by GRP Dadar and RPF Matunga. Officials have stated that further action will be taken if and when a formal complaint is received," said an official.
