A man allegedly driving his car in an inebriated state hit a woman and an on-duty police officials with his SUV on a busy road in Khar area of Mumbai, the police said on Tuesday, reported the PTI.
The police have arrested the suspect who has been identified as Hiten Desai in connection with the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-two-killed-in-western-express-highway-mishap-23354599" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">accident</a>, an official said.
The accident took place at around 7.45 pm on Sunday, an official said, as per the PTI.
Hiten Desai, who was allegedly drunk at the time of the incident, was driving from Linking Road in Bandra west and had reached Khar west when the incident happened, he said, according to the PTI.
The suspect first hit a woman who was standing with her husband near their two-wheeler and then proceeded to ram the SUV into an on-duty policeman who tried to stop him, the official said.
Hiten Desai did not stop the vehicle, but locals managed to intercept him after some distance and handed him over to the traffic police, he said, the news agency reported on Tuesday.
The accused has been arrested under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (endangering life), 353 (assault on public servant), 308 (culpable homicide) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicle Act, the official said.
17-year-old boy knocks down woman with car after dispute in Pune; detained
Meanwhile, in an another incident in Pune, the police detained a 17-year-old boy on charges of attempt to murder after he allegedly knocked down a woman with his car following a dispute in Maharashtra's Pune district, an official said on Monday, reported the PTI.
The woman suffered minor injuries in the incident which took place at Vadgaon Ghenand village in Alandi area on Saturday, he said.
A video has surfaced on social media showing a car being driven recklessly and hitting a woman.
The incident is the fallout of a dispute between families of the juvenile and the woman, according to the Pimpri Chinchwad <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-42-year-old-man-injured-after-street-light-pole-falls-on-him-in-thane-23354684" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">police</a>.
On Saturday, the juvenile hurled abuses at the woman's husband and father-in-law after a dispute. He then got into the car and allegedly threatened to kill the woman and her husband, a police official said.
The juvenile then drove the car recklessly, knocking down the woman, he said.
"The juvenile has been detained. He was presented before the Juvenile Justice Board and was sent to an observation home. We have filed an application requesting permission to try the minor as an adult in the case against him," an official from the Pimpri Chinchwad police station said, according to the PTI.
