A Mazgaon based family who has been suspecting a 'djinn' of stealing gold in small quantities since February 2022 has finally learnt that it was a relative who had been getting his hands on the ornaments. The Byculla Police arrested three people from Gujarat and recovered the stolen property worth lakhs, the police said.

According to a police official, on September 26, a 40-year-old businessman from Mazgaon visited the police station and informed the police that gold worth over Rs 4.05 lakh and Rs 10 lakh cash were stolen from his house in Mazgaon area. The police registered a case of theft and began to investigate the matter.

The police said, the complainant and his family suspected that there was a djinn in his house who had been stealing their gold since February 2022. He told the police in his statement that it was one of the reasons that he was planning to shift his family to another house as they suspected a djinn in their house and hence they never reached out to the police until recently when Rs 14.05 lakh (cash and gold) was stolen from their home.

"We began to investigate the matter and started questioning the family members. We learnt that the statement of a 13-year-old girl was doubtful. While studying the technical evidence, officials found that a 22-year-old cousin of the girl had been visiting Mumbai from Gujarat frequently and talking to her over phone calls. The police then detained him and after sustained questioning he was arrested along with two of his friends, both aged 19 and 22-year-olds," an official said.

He added, her cousin had been convincing her to steal the gold from her house since February due to his financial problems. At the beginning of the crime, he would ask her for small quantity of gold ornaments but recently, he decided to ask her for cash and gold worth over Rs. 14 lakh which made the family suspicious and reached out to the police.

Chimaji Adhav, senior police inspector, Byculla Police Station told mid-day.com, "With detailed investigation, the team was able to make the arrests and a 100 per cent recovery in the case. A total amount of Rs 40. 98 lakh worth of property has been recovered."
