A doctor lost his arm while attempting to save his wife during a purse-snatching attempt by an unidentified miscreant aboard a special train from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) to Nanded on Wednesday.

According to information received, a doctor couple from Panvel was travelling with their daughter to Nanded on the special train. The woman doctor was sleeping on the middle berth, while her husband, also a doctor, was on the upper berth.

An unidentified man suddenly entered the coach at around 3.35 am and attempted to snatch the woman’s purse. A struggle ensued, and in the chaos, the woman fell out of the moving train through the door. Her husband, who tried to save her by jumping out of the train came under the wheel and his hand
was severed.

Despite her injuries and the trauma, the woman managed to carry her severely injured husband along the railway tracks to the nearest road.

With the help of a passing vehicle, a tempo, and an auto driver, she rushed him to Fortis Hospital in Mulund, where he was immediately admitted for emergency treatment.

Meanwhile, the accused managed to flee with the woman’s purse, which contained around Rs 4,500.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) control was immediately alerted. GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials responded promptly.

The couple’s daughter was safely removed from the train in Kalyan, and officers ensured that the family’s belongings were handed over to the woman.

Senior Inspector Sambhaji Yadav of Kurla GRP confirmed the incident. Speaking to mid-day, he said an FIR has been registered and an investigation was underway to identify and apprehend the accused. Several teams have already been formed.

According to police sources, the 45-year-old complainant and her husband reside in the Panvel area and had boarded the train with their nine-year-old daughter.
