Mumbai Police have arrested two men — Irfan Iqbal Shaikh (38) and Abbal Mohammed Ali Khan (29) — for allegedly assaulting, abusing and unlawfully detaining a police officer who was booked in connection with the recent Tardeo garden molestation incident. The arrests come days after the police officer was named in the case.
According to Tardeo Police, the accused allegedly misbehaved with the assistant sub-inspector, used abusive language, and pushed and threatened him while he was on duty. Police said that although the officer was willing to go to a nearby beat chowky on his own in connection with the garden incident, the two men allegedly grabbed his uniform collar and forcibly took him there.
The accused are further alleged to have locked the assistant sub-inspector inside the chowky from the outside, preventing him from leaving, and continued to abuse and threaten him.
Accused have multiple cases registered against them in different police stations, say Mumbai Police
A case has been registered against Shaikh and Khan under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections pertaining to obstructing a public servant in the discharge of official duties, wrongful confinement, voluntarily causing hurt, intentional insult, and criminal intimidation.
Police said both accused have multiple criminal cases registered against them at different police stations. They clarified that the case against the two men is being investigated separately from the earlier incident involving the police officer.
Further investigation is underway, and police said strict action will be taken against those who take the law into their own hands or attempt to disturb public order.
