Mumbai Police's Crime Branch has arrested two men accused of breaking into a jeweller’s shop in Meerut of Uttar Pradesh, and fleeing with gold and silver worth over Rs 57 lakh to Mumbai. The accused were nabbed in Borivali within 24 hours of the theft, police said.

The suspects have been identified as Saurabh Tanaji Sathe (21)and Mohan Maruti Pawar (24).


Acting on a tip-off that the duo was heading to Mumbai, a Crime Branch team laid a trap in Borivali and intercepted them, said an official, adding that a search of their possession led to the recovery of 478.45 grams of gold ornaments valued at Rs 48,00,000, 3.795 kg of pure silver valued at Rs 4,50,000, 8 kg of raw silver worth Rs 4,76,000 and cash amounting to around Rs 20,000.



"The total seized property amounts to Rs 57,46,000," said a police official.

The valuation was carried out by an authorised goldsmith, he said.

According to officials, the accused had allegedly broken the shutters of the jeweller’s shop in Meerut and then looted the store.

Police said that the operation was carried out under the guidance of Commissioner of Police Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Lakhmi Gautam, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shailesh Balkawade, DCP (Detection-1) Vishal Thakur, and ACP (Detection-North) Rajendra Shiratode.

The team comprised officers and staff from multiple Crime Branch units, including Sr PI Manohar Awad (Unit 11), Sr PI Sachin Gavas (Unit 12), PI Bharat Ghone (Unit 6), PIs Babasaheb Kakade, Raut, and several constables.

The accused are in police custody, and further investigation is underway, police said.
