The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/mumbai-coastal-road-updates-group-of-car-drivers-booked-for-rash-driving-at-mumbai-coastal-road-near-marine-drive-cops-launch-manhunt-23648802" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai Police</a> on Wednesday issued a fresh preventive order, imposing a temporary 30-day ban on the operation of private flying devices across the city.
The preventive order pointed at security concerns and the possibility of threats from anti-national elements.
The restriction will come into effect at 12.01 am on September 13, 2026, and remain in force until midnight on October 12, 2026, unless withdrawn earlier, it stated.
<h2>Security measure to prevent possible attacks</h2>
According to the police, the preventive measure is intended to reduce the risk of possible attacks, sabotage or other security threats involving remote-controlled aircraft and low-altitude flying devices.
The police have cited the protection of VVIPs, public safety and critical infrastructure as <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-police-ban-gatherings-of-five-or-more-processions-and-loudspeakers-across-city-till-september-23-23648499" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">key reasons behind the restriction</a>.
<h2>Drones, paragliders and balloons covered</h2>
Under the order, private individuals are prohibited from operating several types of flying devices within the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Police Commissionerate.
The restricted devices include:
- Drones and remote-controlled micro-light aircraft
- Paragliders and paramotors
- Hang gliders
- Hot air balloons
The restriction applies throughout the specified 30-day period.
<h2>Police operations and authorised flights exempt</h2>
The ban does not apply to <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-to-set-up-ministerial-task-force-to-boost-drone-industry-says-cm-devendra-fadnavis-23644669" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">aerial surveillance operations</a> carried out directly by the Mumbai Police.
Flight activities that have received specific prior written permission from the DCP (Operations) will also be exempt from the restriction.
Those seeking to operate permitted flying devices must therefore obtain the required written authorisation before undertaking such activities.
<h2>Violators could face prosecution</h2>
Mumbai Police have warned that anyone violating the order will face legal action.
Violations will be prosecuted under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, according to the order.
The police have circulated the ex-parte order through local police stations and <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/sakinaka-manhole-death-bmc-extends-financial-support-of-rs-10-lakh-to-family-of-victim-aslam-shaikh-who-died-in-july-23648993" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai municipal ward offices</a> to inform residents and ensure compliance.
<h2>Ban to remain in force until October 12</h2>
The restriction will begin at 00:01 hours on September 13 and continue until 24:00 hours on October 12, 2026, unless the order is withdrawn before its expiry.
The move forms part of Mumbai Police's preventive security arrangements aimed at protecting people, VVIPs and important infrastructure from potential threats involving privately operated aerial devices.
