The Kashimira police have arrested a 30-year-old driver on the charge of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl. Accused Kalpesh Devdhare faces at least 18 more such cases across the city, they said.

Crime Branch Unit-I of MBVV police commissionerate formed teams after the child’s family filed a complaint at Nayanagar police station in Mira Road on April 18. It was alleged that an unknown man had taken the girl to an isolated place and raped her.

Cops began scanning footage from all the CCTV cameras at Nayanagar and nearby areas. “We began tracking him and found that he was getting down from a train coming from Virar to Mira Road. We caught him at Nalasopara on Tuesday,” said an officer.

The police said Devdhare initially lived in Malad and Kandivli before moving to Nalasopara. However, he spent much of his time in the central part of the city.

“Devdhare has a wife and kids, but due to his crimes, his family has disowned him. During interrogation, he said that after watching porn films he looks for a target and molests or rapes the victim if he gets a chance,” said senior PI Aviraj Kurade who supervised the investigation.

Before this arrest, Devdhare had been nabbed by the DN Nagar police a couple of years ago. After he walked out of jail on bail, the police said, he has allegedly sexually abused at least four victims before he preyed on the girl at Nayanagar. He molested a college-going girl on a Dadar bridge last month, they said.

Senior crime branch officers said constable Prashant Vispute and Sachin Sawant toiled to track down Devdhare and were guided by PSI Hitendra Vichare.
