The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has suspended Dr Chandan Pandit from Airoli civic hospital following a first information report (FIR) filed against him after six patients lost their vision.

The NMMC issued the order on Tuesday, directing that the eye specialist should not practice anywhere until the investigation is complete. The order further stated that if Dr Pandit is found practising, strict legal action will be taken. It also clarified that the suspension will remain in force until the completion of the investigation.

Along with Dr Pandit, Vashi Police have also named his father, Dr DV Pandit in the FIR. “The doctors are accused of having conducted the surgeries in a rash, hasty and negligent manner,” Senior Inspector Sanjay Dhumal of Vashi Police had earlier stated.

An investigation by the Maharashtra Medical Council has confirmed that four people have lost their vision due to medical negligence by the doctors. The other two cases are under investigation.

The two doctors operate the Pandit Eye and Surgery & Laser Hospital in Vashi’s Sector-10. According to police, the duo has not renewed the licence of the medical facility.

The Vashi Police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
