Delhi Police bust gang using staged road-rage incidents to steal cash; two arrested
Delhi Police uncovered a staged road-rage ploy allegedly used by a gang to steal cash and valuables in crowded markets. The scheme involved one member deliberately bumping into a victim and provoking an altercation, while his accomplice swiftly removed cash or other valuables before fleeing, PTI reported.
Two persons, including a historysheeter, have been arrested in connection with multiple similar thefts in the capital, the police said. According to the authorities, the duo primarily targeted gullible passersby in crowded or semi-isolated areas.
"The gang's modus operandi came to light during the investigation into a Christmas Day theft near the Bara Hindu Rao area, where a 55-year-old car dealer from Faridabad lost Rs 40,000 in cash," a senior police officer said.
The officer explained that the accused created a diversion by staging an altercation following a deliberate collision. While the victim was distracted, the cash was taken from his pocket. CCTV footage from over 50 cameras was analysed, and the suspects’ escape route was tracked. Facial recognition helped identify one of the accused, Honey, a historysheeter from Sadar Bazar, PTI reported.
"Both Honey and his associate Badal were arrested from near their residences on the night of December 27. We have also recovered the stolen money from them," the officer added.
During questioning, the accused admitted to carrying out multiple thefts using the same technique. Police said further investigation is underway to uncover any additional links or incidents involving the duo.
