An official on Saturday said that the Navi Mumbai police have arrested a 36-year-old accused, who had been absconding for 13 years after killing a man over an unpaid loan, reported news agency PTI.
Based on a tip-off, the Navi Mumbai police's crime branch nabbed the accused, Chhotu Markat Yadav, a native of Bihar, from Nagpur district on Thursday, the official said.
According to the police, Chhotu Yadav allegedly stabbed Bhavanakhan Ugan Yadav (50) to death in the Rabale MIDC area in October 2012 and had been on the run since, reported PTI.
A probe has revealed that the victim had borrowed Rs 25,000 from the accused and failed to repay him. Angered by this, the accused attacked him with a sharp weapon and killed him, the official said.
76-year-old woman smothered to death, robbed in Raigad
In another incident, two teenage boys allegedly smothered a 76-year-old woman to death and stole her jewellery in Maharashtra's Raigad district, police said on Tuesday, reported PTI.
The boys, aged 16 and 17 years, were detained on Saturday in connection with the murder that took place on July 24 at Kanghar village in Mhasala, an official said, reported PTI.
He said the boys had arrived at the house of the victim to repair her television. One of them caught the woman, while the other boy smothered her by covering her mouth and nose, reported PTI.
The duo killed her and decamped with her earrings, the official said.
The victim, who lived alone, was later rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead, he said.
Based on a complaint lodged by the victim's son, a case of murder and robbery was registered at Mhasala police station, he said, reported PTI.
The accused were detained and sent to a remand home in Karjat, the official said, adding that a further probe was underway.
Meanwhile, a 27-year-old woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances in outer north Delhi's Narela area on Tuesday, with police detaining her friend, an official said.
According to police, they received information regarding a woman lying unconscious at a house in the area. Upon reaching the spot, the woman, a native of Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh, was found dead.
