Police in Maharashtra's <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/search/thane-all" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Thane</a> district have filed charges against two directors and an employee of a private educational institution for allegedly defrauding nursing students of Rs 52.21 lakh.
The FIR was registered by MFC police in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/search/kalyan-all" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Kalyan</a> town on Saturday.
A first information report (FIR) under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 465 (forgery) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
The complaint states that since 2021, the two directors and the branch head of the institution deceived 36 students out of the mentioned amount.
"The students enrolled in the General Nursing Midwifery course, paying the fees. However, upon course completion, they received advanced diplomas in patient care management instead of nursing," according to a police official.
Furthermore, the students claimed that the institute offered the nursing course without the necessary government permissions.
"As of now, no arrests have been made in this case," the police official added.
Meanwhile, The Maharashtra police's Anti-Narcotics Cell has seized a large stock of Alprazolam tablets and banned cough syrups worth Rs 8.88 lakh and arrested two persons in this connection, officials said on Monday.
On September 18, the police caught a man in Mira-Bhayander area with 300 bottles of a cough syrup mixed with codeine phosphate valued at Rs 1.5 lakh and 10,800 tablets of Alprazolam worth Rs 2.16 lakh, ANC's senior police inspector Amar Marathe said.
The police then registered an FIR against him under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
"During his interrogation, it came to light that he had procured the banned drugs from a person at Valsad in Gujarat," the police official said.
"A police team was sent and the person was traced to a shop in Valsad and arrested on October 6.
The accused were also booked under provisions of the NDPS Act.
