<p>A security guard was arrested on Sunday after allegedly sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl inside a restroom in Mumbai's Pydhonie area, police said, reported the PTI.</p>
<p>The child was rushed to hospital, where she is undergoing treatment. <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/baruipur-rape-murder-case-prime-accused-killed-in-police-encounter-23638909" target="_blank" rel="none noopener"><strong>Police said the accused was taken into custody</strong></a> shortly after a complaint was lodged.</p>
<p>The incident triggered strong public anger, with hundreds of residents assembling outside Pydhonie Police Station to demand strict and immediate action against the accused.</p>
<p>The protest briefly disrupted traffic after demonstrators blocked the road outside the police station, according to the PTI.</p>
<h2>Police bring situation under control</h2>
<p>Police personnel later cleared the road, dispersed the protesters and restored normal traffic movement.</p>
<p>A <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/nasrapur-rape-murder-case-father-of-three-year-old-victim-terms-pune-courts-verdict-satisfactory-23637407" target="_blank" rel="none noopener"><strong>heavy police presence</strong></a> has since been deployed in the area to maintain law and order and prevent any further disturbances, the news agency reported.</p>
<h2>Rahul Narwekar visits police station</h2>
<p>Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar visited Pydhonie Police Station after being informed about the incident, as per the PTI.</p>
<p>Eyewitnesses said some protesters surrounded him during his visit and raised slogans demanding severe punishment for the accused.</p>
<h2>Investigation underway</h2>
<p>Police said the investigation is ongoing and further action will be taken in accordance with the law. Officials added that all aspects of the case are being examined.</p>
<h2>Pune court awards death penalty in child rape-murder</h2>
<p>Meanwhile, a special court in Pune district last month sentenced Bhimrao Prabhakar Kamble, 65, to death for the <strong><a href="https://www.mid-day.com/text-shots/nasrapur-rape-murder-case-verdict-pune-court-awards-death-penalty-after-55-day-fast-track-trial-23637362" rel="nofollow">rape and murder of a three-and-a-half-year-old girl in Nasrapur</a></strong> village of Bhor taluka on May 1. Special Judge SR Salunke pronounced the sentence, declaring the crime to be &ldquo;extremely rare and inhuman&rdquo; and noting that the accused&rsquo;s actions were exceptionally brutal and had severe and long-lasting effects on society.</p>
<p>After the verdict, Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandeep Gill and Special Public Prosecutor Ajay Misar addressed a press conference, highlighting key aspects of the case.</p>
<p>Misar stated that Kamble had followed the girl, kept watch on her, lured her with the promise of gathi sev (a snack), took her away under the pretext of showing her a calf, and then assaulted her. CCTV footage showed the accused walking away with the girl and returning alone later after <strong><a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/nasrapur-verdict-maharashtra-leaders-welcome-death-penalty-verdict-23637386" rel="nofollow">allegedly sexually assaulting the child</a></strong>.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Protests in Pune</h2>
<p>After the incident, the victim&rsquo;s family had lost faith in the legal system to such an extent that they blocked the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway and demanded that the accused be handed over to them, demonstrating the gravity of the crime.</p>
<p>According to Misar, all the charges had already been proven earlier, and the prosecution had placed 12 Supreme Court judgments before the court.</p>
