The Bangladeshi national who is accused of attacking <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/saif-ali-khan-attack-case-accused-seeks-bail-calls-fir-against-him-an-imaginary-story-23585494" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan</a> at his residence in Bandra in January 2025 has approached a court in Mumbai seeking to plead guilty in the case, reported the PTI.
Mohammad Shariful Islam, who was arrested two days after the incident, is currently in judicial custody.
His lawyer, Vipul Dushing, said Islam filed an application expressing his willingness to plead guilty and seeking leniency from the court, the news agency reported.&nbsp;
<h2>Court seeks prosecution's response</h2>
The court has asked the prosecution to file its reply on the application.
The hearing has been adjourned to September 11.
According to the PTI, earlier this month, Additional Sessions Judge G P Deshmukh framed charges against Islam, allowing the trial to proceed.
<h2>Charges framed against accused</h2>
Islam has been charged under relevant provisions of the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/saif-ali-khan-attack-case-charges-framed-against-accused-trial-to-proceed-23644922" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)</a> for robbery involving the use of a deadly weapon, causing grievous hurt and house trespass.
He also faces charges under relevant provisions of the Foreigners Act and the Passport (Entry into India) Rules.
The police had earlier informed the court that the knife used during the attack and the pieces recovered from the accused match.
<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/saif-ali-khan-attacker-wanted-rs-30000-for-his-aadhaar-card-charge-sheet-23519009" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai Police</a> had also referred to the forensic science laboratory report, reiterating their claim that the piece of knife found from the actor's spine during the attack and a piece of knife found at the crime scene match the weapon that they recovered from the accused.
It had earlier told the court that the crime committed by the accused was of a 'very serious nature' and that there is solid evidence against him.
<h2>Saif Ali Khan was stabbed in January 2025</h2>
Khan was allegedly attacked by an intruder inside his 12th-floor apartment in upscale Bandra on January 16, 2025.
The actor was repeatedly stabbed with a knife and suffered serious injuries.
<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/saif-ali-khan-attacker-tracked-police-on-youtube-while-hiding-in-thane-jungle-23521099" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Saif Ali Khan underwent emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital</a> and was discharged five days later.
Mumbai Police had arrested Islam for two days after the alleged attack.
The case will now come before the court again on September 11, when the prosecution is expected to respond to the accused's plea to plead guilty.
