Maharashtra government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the Satara doctor death case, officials said, according to the ANI.

The 28-year-old government hospital doctor was found dead in a hotel room on October 23.

A note written on her palm accused a police officer and two others of subjecting her to physical and mental harassment.

Police Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne and software engineer Prashant Bankar have been arrested on charges of rape and abetment to suicide.

IPS officer Tejaswi Satpute will head the SIT, and the team has been instructed to begin the probe immediately.

The development in the matter follows Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s directive to the state Director General of Police to set up a special team to investigate the case, officials said.

Opposition parties and medical associations had been pressing for an impartial, high-level inquiry into the incident. The deceased doctor was found dead in a hotel room in Phaltan taluka of Satara district last month.

Badne has since been suspended from service.

The case has triggered political controversy, with the Opposition criticising the Chief Minister for allegedly clearing a former BJP MP of any link to the case before the investigation began.

CM Fadnavis, however, maintained that the case should not be politicised and assured strict action against those found guilty.

The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) had earlier launched a protest against the Satara doctor death case, demanding Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the matter.

MARD has expressed deep anguish over the incident, highlighting concerns about administrative accountability, workplace safety, and the dignity of doctors in the government healthcare system.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, activist Manoj Jarange met the kin of the deceased woman doctor.

Jarange met her family and assured them of his support in their fight for justice.

He also spoke to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam over phone and also got them to interact with the doctor's kin.

The leaders assured the family of full support and cooperation.

"The CM Fadnavis has assured me the decision on setting up a Special Investigation Team will be done in two days," Jarange claimed, the news agency reported.
