On May 23, 2012, police officers from the local Varsai police station, and later the Pen Police Station, were informed by a local, Ganesh Dhene about a decomposing body he had found at Gagode Budruk Khindi Village in Pen, Raigad. The body was buried at the same spot in the presence of cops later the same day. Doctors conducted a panchnama and sent samples to Mumbai&rsquo;s JJ Hospital on May 25, 2012. However, while a station diary at the Pen police station has a mention of this, no FIR or Accidental Death Report (ADR) was registered at either of the police stations, as is protocol. Mid-Day was the first to report these lapses in its Thursday edition.
From top IPS officers, down to the constables, all those posted at Varsai and Pen in 2012 will be questioned in this regard. Among those who were then posted at Raigad are Senior Police Inspector Suresh Mirghe of Pen Police Station (currently not posted in Raigad district), Deputy SP Chauhan (currently not posted in Raigad district) and Superintendent of Police (SP) RD Shinde, who is currently posted in Mumbai as Additional Commissioner of the Central Region. PSIs and constables who were at the time posted at Pen and Varsai police stations have all been transferred within the Raigad district.
The current SP of Raigad District, Mohammad Suez Haque, agreed that it is questionable that no FIR or ADR was registered in the case.
He added that after samples were sent to JJ Hospital&rsquo;s Department of Anatomy, no further action was taken. &ldquo;Later, the cops forgot about the incident and no further inquiry was made. The case was closed there,&rdquo; he said.
A source from Mumbai Police told SUNDAY mid-day, &ldquo;The actions of all the policemen involved in the case are suspicious. The body was found inside a suitcase, burnt beyond identification and severely decomposed. It was obvious that it was a murder. Yet, no FIR or ADR was registered. It is believed that they received orders from a senior to hush up the case.&rdquo; Haque added, &ldquo;I will look into the inquiry and submit a report as soon as possible.&rdquo;
