Palghar: A tempo driver enroute to Mumbai from Vapi in Gujarat was allegedly killed by some unidentified persons on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway near Virar here, police said yesterday.
The incident occurred on Saturday night when Pradeep Bhagde (42) was travelling to Mumbai carrying goods worth Rs 10 lakhs from a company, Gujarat Fod Colours, a senior inspector of Virar police station said.
At about 3 am near Kelicha Pada, one of tyres of the vehicle burst. The driver then halted his tempo and started consuming liquor. Some unidentified persons then approached him and attacked him on his head, he said.
Bhagde's body was recovered from the spot on Sunday morning and was sent for postmortem. The officer said that the deceased had received a call moments before the attack, while the goods, cash with the driver and other belonging remained intact at the spot.
A case has been registered against unidentified people under section 302 (murder) of the IPC.
