Thane Government Railway Police personnel arrested a 29-year-old man for theft and injuring a passenger. The police said that the accused, in a bid to snatch the phone from the 22-year-old passenger, hit his hand; however, the victim fell resulting in the loss of a limb.

According to the police, the victim was identified as Shashikant Kumar Ram, a Navi Mumbai resident while the accused was identified as Ganesh Shinde.

The GRP official said Shashikant and Shinde were aboard a local train headed towards Thane but Shinde alighted at Diva and attempted to snatch the former's phone after the train began picking up pace.

"Around 11:56 pm, when the train departed from Diva towards Thane, the accused hit Kumar's left hand in an attempt to snatch his phone. However, the victim too fell on the platform and his hand was caught in the gap between the train and the platform severely injuring Shashikant," the official added.

The accused, Shinde, tried to flee the scene but was caught by the officials stationed there. Meanwhile, Shashikant, returning from his relative's home in Vangani in Badlapur, was shifted to a hospital for treatment.

The Thane GRP have booked Shinde under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and are conducting further probe.

Meanwhile, sources said the accused Ganesh Shinde is not a habitual offender. "He claimed that on the day of the incident, he was inebriated and later committed the crime. He is adamant about keeping his lips sealed and not divulging much details," an officer told mid-day.
