Police have busted an <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/mumbai-fake-loan-racket-busted-in-mulund-five-arrested-for-running-bogus-call-centre-23603105" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">illegal call centre</a> allegedly cheating people under the pretext of providing loans in Maharashtra's Thane district and registered a case against eight persons, officials said on Tuesday, reported PTI.
Acting on a tip-off, a Narpoli police team raided the premises at Anjurphata in Bhiwandi on June 19, exposing the racket, an official said.
During the operation, the police seized various electronic gadgets and equipment collectively valued at Rs 1.03 lakh, he said.
The accused connived to set up the<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-police-bust-fake-international-call-centre-cheating-us-and-canadian-citizens-five-arrested-23602845" target="_blank" rel="none noopener"> bogus call centre</a> under the name "Quick Loan". The staff used to contact unsuspecting victims across the country, offering them easy loans. They collected processing fees from the applicants, but did not arrange the loans, the official said, reported PTI.
Following the raid, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on June 20 against eight persons, including the centre operators and callers, under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 316(2) (criminal breach of trust), 318(4) (cheating), and 3(5) (common intention), and provisions of the Information Technology Act.
The police were examining the call centre's transaction records to determine the exact number of victims and the total monetary value of the fraud, the official added.

In another case, two men have been arrested in connection with a series of housebreaking incidents, and valuables worth Rs 14.5 lakh were recovered from them in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-crime-branch-busts-international-cyber-fraud-syndicate-arrests-12-23590750" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Maharashtra's</a> Palghar district, police said on Monday, reported PTI.
A spurt of burglaries was reported in Dahanu taluka over the last few months, following which special teams were formed to nab the culprits, District Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh said, reported PTI.
Acting on a tip-off, the police on Saturday arrested Hasmat Ali Tahir Sheikh (33) and Anwar Ali Tahir Sheikh (41), both residents of the Nalasopara area and hailing from Uttar Pradesh, he said.
"During sustained interrogation, the duo confessed to their involvement in seven burglaries across the Gholwad, Dahanu, and Wangaon police station limits," the official said, reported PTI.
