Two men have been arrested for allegedly stealing a passenger's bag containing valuables worth Rs 1.65 lakh on the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/thane-two-house-helps-booked-for-stealing-jewellery-worth-rs-16-lakh-23602989" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai-Gondia Vidarbha Express</a>, officials said on Thursday, reported news agency PTI.
The incident took place between Thane and Kalyan stations, on the outskirts of Mumbai, on Monday.
Senior inspector Pandhari Kande of the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/iron-rod-theft-foiled-in-thane-4-truck-drivers-among-9-booked-23602679" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Kalyan railway police station</a> said that complainant Mayur Dilip Amritkar (30), a resident of Nashik, had come to Thane for some work. He later boarded the Vidarbha Express from Thane station for his return journey, reported PTI.
Amritkar had kept his laptop bag, containing cash, a camera, and other valuables, near his reserved seat close to the door in sleeper coach number five. "While adjusting his luggage, he noticed that the bag was missing. He lodged a complaint with the railway police after the train reached Kalyan," the official said, reported PTI.
Using <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/maharashtra-thane-police-recover-and-return-stolen-property-worth-rs-1-18-crore-23601813" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">CCTV footage</a> and technical inputs, the railway police nabbed the two thieves within two and a half hours and recovered all the stolen items worth Rs 1.65 lakh, the official said, adding that the complainant's belongings were returned to him.
<h2>Two domestic helps booked for theft of Rs 16 lakh jewellery in Thane district</h2>
In another case, a case has been registered against two female domestic helps for allegedly stealing ornaments worth Rs 16.25 lakh from a 61-year-old woman doctor's home in Maharashtra's Thane district, an official said on Thursday, reported PTI.
The theft was committed between August and November 11 at the complainant's house located on <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/thane-man-booked-for-power-theft-of-rs-4-19-lakh-after-power-companys-complaint-23598467" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Murbad Road</a> in Kalyan, said the official from Mahatma Phule Chowk police station, reported PTI.
The accused, aged 45 and 21, are residents of Kalyan and Dombivli, respectively, though their full addresses are yet to be ascertained, the official said.
"The complainant approached us after noticing that her gold ornaments were missing. The total value of the stolen property has been estimated at Rs 16.25 lakh. We are hopeful of tracing the accused soon," the official said.
<h2>Six held for theft of steel bars in Palghar</h2>
Meanwhile, the police have arrested six gang members for allegedly stealing steel bars from construction suppliers in Maharashtra's <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/thane-police-bust-interstate-gang-behind-rs-51-lakh-godown-theft-23588589" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Palghar district</a>, officials said on Wednesday, reported PTI.
Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted the accused on Tuesday while they were transferring steel bars from two trucks into a tempo in the Vasai area, they said, reported PTI.
The consignment was being transported from a company in Wada to a firm in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/woman-held-for-stealing-jewellery-from-commuters-at-thane-railway-station-23597159" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Nalasopara</a> when the accused tried to steal it.
