The police on Monday said that three persons, among them two from Karnataka, have been arrested for alleged possession of 120 bottles of codeine syrup in Maharashtra's Thane district, reported news agency PTI.

The trio were apprehended with the banned substance near the APMC market in Kalyan last month, an official said.


He said the police seized 120 bottles of codeine syrup worth Rs 27,000 and arrested Kalyan resident Tousif Asifg Surve (34), Lingraj Aparay Algud (40) and Irfan alias Mohsin Ibrahim Sayyed (34), both hailing from Karnataka, reported PTI.



A case has been registered against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and a probe is underway to trace the source of the contraband and the intended customers, the official said.

20 kg ganja seized from car in Thane; 3 held

In another case, the police have seized 20 kg of ganja valued at Rs 4 lakh from a car and arrested three persons in this connection in Maharashtra's Thane district, officials said on Monday, reported PTI.

A police team spotted the car parked near a temple in the Kamathghar area on Friday.

During inspection, they recovered 20.663 kg of ganja concealed inside the vehicle, an official from Narpoli police station said, reported PTI.

The car was impounded and its three occupants were taken into custody, he said.

The seized ganja is valued at Rs 4,02,928 in the illicit drug market, the official said, reported PTI.

The arrested persons comprise two unemployed men, aged 25 and 29 and hailing from Shirpur in Dhule district, and a 25-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh, he said.

They have been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the police added.

Cops seize 710 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, arrest two

Earlier this month, the Malwani police in Malad on Tuesday arrested two individuals and seized 710 bottles of codeine phosphate-based cough syrup labelled Onerex, which have an estimated market value of Rs 3,55,000, from them. The accused were arrested for the sale of the illegal substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Acting on the directives of Zone XI DCP Anand Bhoite, Senior Police Inspector Shailendra Nagarkar’s surveillance team led by Police Sub-Inspector Dr Deepak Hinde was conducting patrol duty in Beat No. 1, during which they detained two suspects, and upon inspection, police discovered two white sacks containing plastic bottles of cough syrup labelled Onerex, which contains codeine phosphate, a controlled narcotic substance.
