Two people were injured after a gas-filled bundle of balloons exploded inside a lift of a building in Mumbai's Goregaon, officials said on Wednesday, adding the the police has launched a probe into the matter.

According to the police, the incident took place on February 2, 2026, at around 10:30 pm.

"Two people sustained serious burn injuries after a bunch of air-filled balloons exploded inside a lift at a residential building in Goregaon West," a police said.

The injured have been identified as Himani Gagan Tapariya (21), a student from Surat in Gujarat and Raju Kumar Mahto (25), a resident of Andheri West.

Police said that Tapariya suffered burns to her right hand, neck and abdomen, while Mahto sustained burns to his face.

What happened

Tapariya had travelled to Mumbai for an admission interview and was heading to her aunt’s residence on the 10th floor of Anmol Tower. She entered the lift when Mahto and his associates also boarded, carrying 10 to 12 air-filled balloons.

Mahto reportedly works for an event management company that supplies balloons and decorations for parties. As the lift ascended, the balloons suddenly exploded, causing panic and severe injuries to both occupants.

Police said the balloons were allegedly ordered by Arpit Jain, a resident of Room No. 1003, Anmol Tower.

A preliminary inquiry revealed that Mahto was not provided with any safety equipment while handling the balloons.

A police officer said the incident appears to have been caused by negligence and careless conduct on the part of the employer.

Cops begin probe

Based on Tapariya’s statement, the Goregaon Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The employer, Tripurari Kumar Jaisawal, has been booked in connection with the incident.

Both injured individuals were rushed to separate hospitals and are currently undergoing treatment and an investigation was underway, police said.
