Over 100 coins from the 18th century were stolen from a builder&rsquo;s office in Vasai (West) on Sunday night. The coins date back to the British Raj era, and are worth around Rs 5 lakh today.

The coins were stolen from the office of Hasmukh Shah, the owner of KT Builder located at the State Bank building, near Vasai railway station. The victim, Shah, is a well-known builder who has developed several resorts in the city.
According to the police, Shah had gone home on Sunday once the office was locked up. He returned on Monday morning to find that the office door had been broken down, and his entire collection of ancient coins had been stolen from the locker. Shah also found another Rs 2.6 lakh missing in cash.

It is the coins that Shah most longs to recover, however, especially for their sentimental value. &ldquo;There were more than 100 coins from the British era in the 18th century.
My great-grandfather had given them to me. I used to keep them safe in the locker, and every year we used them during any pooja at home. Its value is around Rs 5 lakh, but I will give double its value to the robber if he returns them to me,&rdquo; he told mid-day.
A complaint was registered at the Manikpur police station, where officials said, &ldquo;We registered a housebreaking complaint against unknown persons. Though there is a CCTV camera in the office, it has not been working for the past four days. We assume that insiders have played a role in the crime.&rdquo;
