2,202 kids to miss school on Monday

On Monday, as most children get back to school for the new academic year, over 2,000 kids will miss their first day of school.

Almost a month after the first round of online admissions under Right To Education (RTE) reservation quota was conducted, the remaining students were allotted seats in the second round of admissions on Saturday.

Held at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) education head office in Dadar, civic officials stated that 2,202 students were allotted seats in the second round of admissions. Schools now have time till June 21 to confirm these admissions. This means that students who were allotted seats in the second round of admissions have to wait a week till their admissions are confirmed.

“The lottery was only conducted for schools that received more applications as compared to the seats available. Two thousand two hundred and two students have been allotted seats in schools in the second round,” said Sunil Dhamne, deputy municipal commissioner (education).

He added that 152 schools which received less applications compared to the seats available under the RTE quota had to confirm all applications that they received. “Schools cannot deny admissions to any student and they will have to finish the admission process within a week. Whatever the students miss in terms of education in this week, schools will have to ensure that it will be covered for each and every child,” he added. Schools who flout rules and refuse to admit children without any valid reasons can also lose their recognition.

Officials from BMC and Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited, which conducted the online process, stated that those kids who had been allotted seats in the first round but whose admissions remained unconfirmed were considered in the second round.
