Nearly six years after a bookie and his son were kidnapped and wife assaulted by a DCP and two senior inspectors looking to make a quick buck, it took the intervention of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for the police to finally take some action in the case.

On February 26 this year, the Mumbai police recorded the statements of Ulhasnagar punter Anil Jaisinghani (in pic) and his wife in the complaint filed against Deputy Commissioner of Police Amar Jadhav and two senior inspectors for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting them on September 26, 2009.

In March 2010, mid-day had reported that the policemen had allegedly forced Jaisinghani to place bets on their behalf, threatening to shoot Jaisinghani&rsquo;s nine-year-old son if he refused, and made R1.5 crore from them.
Long fight In his complaint, which the police finally registered in 2011, Jaisinghani had stated that DCP Jadhav who has been on leave following the complaint and two senior inspectors had allegedly kidnapped Jaisinghani and his nine-year-old son.
The officers had detained them at a hotel for four days and forced Jaisinghani to place bets on their behalf on an India-Australia match taking place in South Africa.
Later, when Jaisinghani&rsquo;s wife Karishma reached the hotel to pay the ransom, Jadhav had allegedly pulled her by her hair and banged her head against the wall. He had then called a doctor to attend to her wounds. Since then, the family has received a number of threat calls to withdraw the case, but they resisted.
Ray of hope Finally, in January this year, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asked Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria to take action in this case (a copy of the letter is with mid-day). Rakesh Maria then forwarded the case to the crime branch and ordered them to initiate an inquiry at the earliest.
Crime branch officers, under Additional Commi-ssioner of Police K M M Prasanna, began the inquiry and, on February 26, recorded the statements of Jaisinghani and Karishma.
In the statements (available with this paper), they have given a detailed report on the incident and the crimes committed by Jadhav against them. Officials said Jadhav will also be called soon and necessary action will be taken.
'Send him to jail' Jaisinghani said, &ldquo;We have been waiting for justice for a long time. Earlier, the government did not take initiative, probably because of political pressure. We are happy that the current government has taken cognisance of our case and an inquiry has been initiated.&rdquo; &ldquo;We are sure that Jadhav will be punished for his crime. He was asked to proceed on leave and now we want him to be suspended and sent behind bars for the things that he has done to us,&rdquo; he added.
