Just a week after a Mulund resident slipped and died during a trek in Panvel, on Sunday a 20-year-old boy from Byculla lost his life in a similar way at Raigad Fort in Pune. The incident happened when he was trying to pick up a portable charger, which fell off his hand and slid towards the edge of a cliff. However, locals and the other trekkers, with whom he had gone, found his body and rushed him to the nearest hospital where he was declared dead. A case of accidental death has been registered at Velhe police station.

Went with 16 trekkers
Deceased Anurag Rakshe had gone to Raigad Fort with 16 other trekkers. “After they reached the Fort in the wee hours of February 14, they entered it from Pali Gate. While clicking pictures of the sunrise, Anurag reached a point named Padmavati Machi for a better view, but suddenly his charger slipped from his hand and slid to the edge of the cliff,” said an officer from Velhe police station.

When the group moved away from the spot, Anurag bent down to pick up the charger and slipped into the valley, which is around 100 feet deep. “When the trekkers couldn’t find him at the spot, they immediately informed the Pune Rural police over phone,” said another officer.

On being found, Anurag was rushed to Karanjavane Primary Health Centre where he was declared dead on arrival. A senior officer said, “Many a times trekkers try doing dangerous things not knowing they might cause harm or lead to their death. This is one such incident.”

‘Must have basic skills’
Speaking to mid-day, Vivek Patil from Tunga Trekkers, said, “Trekking is not just an adventure, it’s a sport and you must have basic skills for it. Such incidents can be easily avoided. No matter how experienced a trekker you are, every step has to be taken with utmost care.”

Parag Sarode from Nisarg Mitra in Panvel, said, “Overconfidence can cost a life during trekking expeditions. The incident is unfortunate but also reflects the irresponsible behavior of the trekker and the team he was with. This incident could have been easily avoided.”
