The Mahayuti, which includes BJP and Shiv Sena, on Friday emerged as the dominant force in the 131-member Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), securing an overwhelming 103 seats in the home turf of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
According to official data, the Shiv Sena won 75 seats, while the BJP secured 28, giving the ruling alliance a commanding majority in the civic body. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and contesting the polls separately despite being a Mahayuti ally, won nine seats.
Among the opposition parties, the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) managed to win 12 seats, while the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) was reduced to just one seat. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the Congress failed to open their accounts, drawing a blank in the election.
The rout proved particularly damaging for the Congress and the MNS, with senior local leaders from both parties suffering defeats. Congress’ Thane unit chief Vikrant Chavan lost his seat, as did MNS city unit president Ravindra More. The outcome came despite a joint rally held in Thane by MNS chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray during the campaign. At the rally, Raj Thackeray had alleged that rival parties were offering “crores of rupees” to candidates to withdraw from the contest.
Meanwhile, the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM improved its tally, winning five of the 15 seats it contested. The party had two corporators in the TMC in the previous elections.
Other parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), also failed to register any victories in the results declared so far. Out of 174 independent candidates who entered the fray, only one managed to win a seat.
With this emphatic performance, the Mahayuti has further consolidated its hold over Thane, reaffirming its political dominance in one of Maharashtra’s key urban centres.
