Early leads from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election counting indicate a tight contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)–Shiv Sena Mahayuti alliance and other parties.
Preliminary postal ballot data show the alliance leading in around 52 wards, though official figures from the State Election Commission (SEC) and BMC are still awaited.
According to postal ballot counts so far, the BJP leads in 35 seats, while Shiv Sena (UBT) has a lead in 17 seats. For the Thackeray family, the morning brought mixed results: Shiv Sena (UBT) is leading in 22 seats, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in 8 seats, and Congress in 4 seats, according to the news agency ANI.
The BMC elections, conducted after an eight-year gap, recorded a voter turnout of 52.94 per cent, as per the SEC. Out of 1,03,44,315 registered voters, 54,76,043 cast their votes, including 29,23,433 men, 25,52,359 women, and 251 transgender electors.
The polls, which concluded on Thursday, faced allegations of irregularities from the Shiv Sena (UBT)–MNS alliance, later dismissed by the SEC. The last BMC elections were held in 2017, and Mumbai is now set to get a new mayor after nearly four years since the term of Kishori Pednekar ended in March 2022.
Exit polls suggest a BJP–Shiv Sena alliance victory, with the Thackeray brothers trailing and Congress failing to make a significant impact. In 2017, the undivided Shiv Sena had won 84 out of 227 seats, with the alliance with BJP securing the halfway mark of 114 seats (BJP: 82 seats).
