The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) released its second list of candidates for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, naming 15 more nominees and taking its total tally to 36 candidates out of 227 wards. Last week, AAP had released a list of 21 candidates.
With the announcement, AAP claimed it has taken an early lead in election preparedness, even as major political parties in Maharashtra are yet to finalise their candidate lists. The party contrasted its readiness with the continuing uncertainty among the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and the various factions of Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
Commenting on the political developments, AAP Mumbai president Preeti Sharma Menon said that while recent attention has been focused on the coming together of Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, public discourse has largely been limited to exchanges of accusations among rival parties. She alleged that leaders from the BJP and Shiv Sena were engaged in political mudslinging, while the Congress remained largely absent from the conversation.
Menon accused established parties of being “status quo beneficiaries,” alleging that they had collectively failed Mumbai—either while in power at the BMC or by remaining complicit as opposition forces. According to her, the lack of tangible civic work has led these parties to rely on diversionary politics rather than presenting concrete agendas for the city.
She added that AAP was focusing on governance-centric politics inspired by the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, emphasising development and public services over rhetoric. “While other parties are still struggling to agree on a single list of candidates, AAP has already released two lists, and its candidates have begun outreach at the grassroots level,” Menon said.
AAP leaders reiterated that the party’s campaign would centre on civic issues, transparency, and accountability in municipal governance, positioning itself as an alternative to traditional political formations such as the Bharatiya Janata Party, Indian National Congress, Shiv Sena, and the Nationalist Congress Party ahead of the high-stakes BMC elections 2026.
