The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday held Sion flyover reconstruction review meeting and said that it has set May, 2026 deadline for its completion, officials said.

They said that the top civic officials directed that the reconstruction work of the Sion railway flyover be completed by May 31, 2026. The instructions were issued by Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar during the review meeting, which was also attended by Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic),  Anil Kumbhare.

During the meeting reviewed the current progress of the flyover project, which connects the eastern and western parts of Sion. Officials from BMC’s infrastructure department, including Deputy Commissioner (Infrastructure) Girish Nikam, Chief Engineer (Bridges) Uttam Shrote, Deputy Chief Engineer (City) Rajesh Mulye, and Railway Deputy Chief Engineer (Construction) Rohit Mehla, were present, an official statement said.

Bangar stated that the work should proceed in a planned and efficient manner.

During the meeting, it was decided that BMC will coordinate closely with the railway department to ensure timely completion while minimising inconvenience to citizens. All agencies involved have been asked to maintain effective cooperation and implement all necessary measures to meet the deadline, it said.

The reconstruction schedule includes:

- Completion of the underpass on Lal Bahadur Shastri Road by December 2025.

- Completion of the Dharavi-side underpass by February 2026.

- Girder launching on the northern half of the railway bridge in the first week of March 2026.

- Girder launching on the southern half of the railway bridge in the first week of April 2026.

- Completion of other railway works following girder installation.

- Completion of approach roads towards Dharavi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Road by April 15, 2026.

- Commencement of works on the eastern approach road after 15 April 2026, requiring approximately 45 days.

If the schedule is followed, the flyover will be fully ready by 31 May 2026 and can be opened to traffic from 1 June 2026.

Bangar also stated that timely availability of girders, which are currently being fabricated in Nagpur and Ambala, was very important for meeting the deadline of the work.

He stated that the BMC representatives will supervise the fabrication and ensure the girders are delivered on time.

He emphasised that BMC and Railway officials must work together effectively to complete the project while minimising inconvenience to citizens.
