Considering that people’s lives are something that is important, in a significant work of upgrading local train services in Mumbai, the Central Railway has worked on and created a door-closing mechanism for non-AC trains. The demo unit, which has been completed, was constructed after the Railway Minister of India, Ashwini Vaishnaw, directed that there should be safe local trains in Mumbai so that no other tragedy like Mumbra happens again.

The urgency of upgradation comes after some of the innocent people lost their lives because of the tragic Mumbai local train tragedy that happened at Mumbra station earlier. While the cause of that accident still remains a mystery, people are more interested in experiencing a much safer version of the Mumbai local trains.

After a high-level meeting with some of the top integral coach manufacturers, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw finalised the new design with three key changes, including automatic doors with louvres, roof-mounted ventilation units to pump in fresh air, and interconnecting vestibules between coaches.

The prototype project of the train coach is currently stationed at Kurla. However, the demo coach does not have louvres as planned, but lattice design panels have been placed with sheer perfection to give a view of how the train coach of a local train might look and feel.

While addressing the enhancement of the Mumbai local train services for the future, one of the officials stated that. “An automatic closing door is being worked out at the Kurla crash site, and it will be used for experimental runs to assess how it performs while on the run. The railway board had asked the Central Railway as well as the manufacturers, Integral Coach Factory, to work on such trains for the safety of passengers.”
