COVID-19: Mumbai records over 700 cases on second consecutive day

While the state recorded 5,427 new cases on Thursday, this took the total tally of Maharashtra to 20.81 lakh cases. The total number of COVID-related deaths however have not spiked as the state recorded 38 deaths. Mumbai reported 736 new cases on Thursday.

After a gap of almost two months the state and city have again started to see a sharp spike in COVID-19 cases. For the second consecutive day, the city recorded over 700 cases. 


While the state recorded 5,427 new cases on Thursday, this took the total tally of Maharashtra to 20.81 lakh cases. The total number of COVID-related deaths however have not spiked as the state recorded 38 deaths. Mumbai reported 736 new cases on Thursday.  


The Thane Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan Dombivali Corporation, too are seeing an increase in cases as they too recorded numbers in three digits; 203, 104 and 134 respectively in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The state’s recovery rate too has dropped over the past few days and now stands at 95.5 per cent with 2,534 patients discharged on Thursday. Mumbai’s recovery rate stands at 94 per cent while the doubling rate has dropped to 417 days. The city has 6,201 ongoing cases.


The mortality rate of the state was 2.48 per cent. The number of deaths due to other causes in the state was 1,189 so far. These deaths are the cases where patients were positive and tested negative but later died due to other complications. The state saw 1.55 crore laboratory samples collected out of which 20.81 lakh have tested positive with 13.41 per cent positivity ratio in the state.

Nagpur led the death numbers in the state with 7 cases. However, 11 cases were reported in MMR with Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation reporting 5 cases, Mumbai recording 4 deaths and Thane region and Navi Mumbai recording one death each. 

In the case of health workers where the civic body was struggling to attract larger numbers in the past few days, Thursday saw a turnout above expected figures for vaccinations. Out of the 3,000 expected beneficiaries, 3,316 came and of these health workers, 954 took the second dose. The BMC had expected 7,500 frontline workers out of which 10,097 turned up.
