Eighty years after it first ferried passengers from Mumbai to Pune, the Deccan Queen continues to link the two cities and transport commuters daily.

The train was one of the first superfast electric passenger trains in the Indian Railways and had also been among the first to have a dining car for its passengers.

"I live in Pune but since all practice is in Mumbai I travel daily on the Deccan Queen. On a daily basis I travel on the basis of the schedule of the train," a lawyer who is one of hundreds of commuters who travel by the train said.

The Deccan Queen initially had underframes built by the Metropolitan Cammel C & W Works in England, while the car bodies were assembled at the Matunga wagon workshop in Mumbai.

It was also the first train to radically reduce the travelling time between the two cities. Departing from Pune at 0715 hours daily the train, with distinctive white and blue compartments, ferries its passengers to Mumbai by 1030 hours and then takes them leaves on its return journey at 1710 hours.

On the 80th anniversary of the train, regular commuters plan have said they plan to a cake in celebration of the Deccan Queen and it crossed many more milestones in the future.
