The CEO of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) SVR Srinivas on Tuesday said that the project is core to Mumbai’s redevelopment, highlighting housing and livelihoods.
During an interview with ANI, Srinivas explained the project that not only focuses on laying the foundation for building infrastructure but also building resilient ecology.
"The vision is slum-free Mumbai. That is the broader vision. And through that, to become slum-free Maharashtra. And it's a project of importance and central to the redevelopment of Mumbai. So it is also a step towards slum-free India. That is the vision," he said.
"The motto is housing for all. Nobody should be left out in the process as far as housing is concerned. It is the most inclusive Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project ever undertaken in India," he added.
The DRP is one of the significant urban renewal initiatives to support overall development of Mumbai. This project aims to develop the Dharavi area, Asia’s largest slum, into a well planned township.
Srinivas also highlighted the unwavering commitment of the government to transform one of Asia's largest settlements into a sustainable urban space. He also added that the DRP is more inclined towards preserving the livelihood than providing a shelter.
"The most important part of this project is number one, housing for all, which we are giving. Number two, ensure that the livelihoods are protected. It is more of a livelihoods issue. And I call this project a movement, because such a project has never ever taken place in our redevelopment history or urban history anywhere in India," Srinivas said.
This project is being implemented through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. This project is a joint venture between the government of Maharashtra and Adani Group.
According to the project all the eligible residents in Dharavi will get their own independent flat with facilities like kitchen and toilet of area measuring 350 square feet, which is 17 per cent more than and highest if compared to other slum redevelopment projects in Mumbai.
Last month the DRP was approved by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis. This master plan is an attempt to build a world-class district for the residents of Dharavi on the existing property in the heart of Mumbai city.
The DRP is a unique opportunity that will transform the lives and living conditions of Dharavikars. The project aims for a better quality of life with great infrastructure and public amenities.
According to the DRP, the foundation will be laid on three guiding principles:driving economic change through redevelopment, building resilient ecology and infrastructure, and fostering an equitable Dharavi.
This residential project will have inhouse green and public spaces, ranging from large city to smaller community playground, ensuring vibrant open areas accessible to every resident.
This project will strengthen and enhance the quality for residents of Dharavi. A large active public open space is being planned in the centre of Dharavi, which will not only serve the recreation needs of the residents but also of Mumbai city at large.
