As the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) wants to construct the elevated BKC-Chunabhatti road at the earliest, the Central Railways has asked them to clear the slums adjacent to railway tracks near Chunabhatti, if they want permission for it.

MMRDA has agreed to the condition and will remove the encroachments near the railway tracks. If this is not done, the project might get delayed.
Getting permission to construct a portion of the elevated connector over the railway tracks is crucial, so the planning authority, which wants the project to be completed at the earliest, will resettle and rehabilitate the slum dwellers near the railway tracks, where it will have to construct a portion of the BKC-Chunabhatti connector.
MMRDA says MMRDA Joint Project Director Dilip Kawatkar said, &ldquo;I will have to check the exact number of slum structures that will have to be removed near the railway tracks at Chunabhatti, but it&rsquo;s true that we will have to resettle and rehabilitate few people. Our main aim is to complete the BKC-Chunabhatti connector without any delay.&rdquo;
There are only around 15-30 hutments which will have to be cleared and MMRDA does not want these few structures to derail the mega project, so it has agreed to the CR&rsquo;s request.
The bhoomipujan of BKC-Chunabhatti connector was done by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in April this year and the same day the north bound arm of Kherwadi flyover was also opened for traffic.
The authorities have set the target to complete the work in 30 months against the 36 months&rsquo; deadline that has been stated in the agreement between the contractor and MMRDA. The piling activity, along with the erection of pillars, has also started and the work is going on in full swing.
Sources also told mid-day that a review meeting of the project development status is also taken at regular intervals, and a plan has been chalked out to complete various jobs that include erection of piers, launching of girders etc.
