Five dead, two injured as car plunges 150 feet off Jagbudi river bridge on Mumbai-Goa Highway

Two families from Mira Road and Nalasopara were headed to Ratnagiri for last rites when their car veered off the bridge. The incident occurred around 5 am on Monday. Two families were en route to Devrukh for a funeral when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which skidded off the bridge and fell into the river.

Five family members lost their lives and two sustained serious injuries after their car fell off the Jagbudi river bridge on the Mumbai-Goa Highway near Bharne Naka in Ratnagiri, plunging from a height of 150 feet. The family was travelling in a seven-seater vehicle to Devrukh for the funeral of a relative. Police said the spot is an accident-prone area.

The incident occurred around 5 am on Monday. Two families were en route to Devrukh for a funeral when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which skidded off the bridge and fell into the river.


The deceased have been identified as Mitali Vivek More, 45, and her son Nihar Vivek More, 19, both residents of Indraprastha building in the Poonam Vihar Complex, Mira Road. Mitali's husband, Vivek More, 46, survived but suffered serious injuries.

Others who died in the accident include Megha Parmesh Paradkar, Saurav Parmesh Paradkar, and Shreyas Rajendra Sawant, all residents of Nalasopara.

The survivors, Vivek More and the car driver Parmesh Paradkar, were initially admitted to Kalambani Sub-District Hospital and later shifted to Ratnagiri District Government Hospital for further treatment.

Ranvir Bajpai, a member of the housing society where the More family lived, said, “On Sunday, May 18, around 11.30 pm, the More family and four relatives from Nalasopara left Mira Road in a seven-seater vehicle. They were on their way to Karli, Devrukh in Ratnagiri for the funeral rites of Vivek More’s father-in-law, Mohan Kashiram Chalkhe, who had passed away.”

Nishad Sawant, brother of deceased Shreyas Sawant, said, “All of them were our relatives, and they were on their way to a funeral when the accident happened. We received information from the police that a car had fallen into the Jagbudi river from the bridge. We lost five family members in this incident. I also lost my brother, Shreyas Sawant.”

Speaking with mid-day, Dhananjay Kulkarni, superintendent of police, Ratnagiri said, “The car driver lost control, and the vehicle skidded and fell into the river. With the help of a crane, we lifted the car. This is an accident-prone area. The bridge begins with a sharp curve. A few days ago, a truck also fell into the river after the driver lost control.”

The deceased Mitali More was a housewife, her son Nihar More was in the final year of his graduation and the injured Vivek More works at a private firm.
