At first light on Thursday, the Indian Navy carried out a medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) operation using a Sea King helicopter launched from INS Shikra in Mumbai to rescue an Iranian fisherman who had sustained severe burn injuries following an explosion onboard an Iranian dhow in the Arabian Sea.

The fisherman had earlier been recovered by Indian Coast Guard ship ICGS Sachet on October 28, following a request for assistance from Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Chabahar.

The Sea King helicopter flew over 120 nautical miles into the sea after refuelling at INS Hansa, Goa, and undertook the evacuation amid marginal weather and rough sea conditions using a MEDEVAC litter.

Upon arrival at Goa, the casualty was transferred to INHS Jeevanti for further medical treatment.

The operation exemplified the Indian Navy’s valour, professionalism, and seamless coordination with the Indian Coast Guard, reaffirming its role as the First Responder in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
