Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College and King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital marked its centennial celebrations on Wednesday, with Mumbai Suburban Deputy Minister and Minister of Skill, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, attending the event as the chief guest.
Addressing officials and dignitaries, Lodha emphasised over the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to improve patient facilities and deliver information on central and state health schemes.
“While providing maximum amenities to patients, it is essential to introduce AI-enabled services and guide citizens on government health programmes,” he said.
The minister also suggested the establishment of a communication centre to enable medical students to interact with experts across India, providing mentorship and guidance for aspiring healthcare professionals. He urged the hospital to focus on facilities for patients and their relatives, including treatment information and seating arrangements, with AI to streamline these services.
Other dignitaries present included MLA Kalidas Kolambkar, Public Health Deputy Commissioner Sharad Ugade, Director of Medical Education and Major Hospitals Dr Shailesh Mohite, and KEM Hospital Superintendent Dr. Sangita Rawat.
Highlighting ongoing digital transformation, Dr Ugade said the hospital is prepared to use the Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) at full capacity soon, improving efficiency and service quality. KEM Hospital has a bed capacity of 2,000 and can handle 6,000 outpatients daily.
Plans for a new service tower aim to provide multiple diagnostic facilities under one roof. Additionally, the college will soon offer a 1,200-capacity hostel for medical students. Dr Rawat emphasised the contributions of doctors, nurses, and support staff in maintaining smooth hospital operations.
Lodha also recommended personality development programmes and field sports competitions for medical staff to promote holistic growth alongside high-quality healthcare delivery.
